Synopsis :

I. Constance, princess of Navarre, is held prisoner by the cruel Don Pedro, king of Castile. She manages nevertheless to escape and find refuge, in disguise, with the Baron Don Morillo. At his palace, she meets the young Alamir and seems unsettled by this encounter. He himself falls in love with the princess and rejects Sanchette, Don Morillo’s daughter. And yet he is — unknowingly — the Navarre family’s ancestral enemy, since his true identity is Gaston de Foix. Warriors, bohemians and astrologers appear in turn at court and offer the ladies and gentlemen a varied divertissement.

II. When told that emissaries from Castile claim the princess, Alamir pledges to protect her. Constance then reveals her true identity. Alamir’s army, joining forces with the French, defeats Don Pedro’s troops. Although she feels her resistance to her growing love for Alamir weakening, the princess remains hesitant: she knows that Sanchette loves her but believes that his condition is too humble for her own future position. The Graces appear and offer a poetic divertissement that silences her heart’s hesitations for a while.

III. Alamir, celebrated as a victor, finally reveals his true identity; the social barrier is down, Constance no longer resists her inclination and decides to marry him. Cupid (L’Amour) is the hero of the final celebrations against the backdrop of the Pyrenees mountains.

Mémoires secrets (Bachaumont)

« 6 Novembre [1769]. »
